Hannibal Regional Healthcare System hosted the 24th annual Chaplain’s Appreciation Banquet on the evening of March 16th at the Shirley Bomar Community Center with the meal catered by Hannibal Regional’s Food Services. The 2016 Hannibal Regional Volunteer Chaplaincy Corps officers were recognized for their service and some volunteer chaplains were awarded for their years of service. Pastor Jack Kennedy and Greg Koelliker were recognized for ten years of service.
Pastor John Paul Tomko was recognized as the Volunteer Chaplain of the Year for 2017. He is the pastor of the Big River Chapel in Hannibal and volunteered over 720 hours in 2016. Pastor John Paul received this honor because of the many positive comments from patients and Hannibal Regional team members and because he continually goes above and beyond expectations.
The annual Volunteer Chaplaincy Corps business meeting was also conducted at this time. The following were elected to serve as the Volunteer Chaplaincy Corps Executive Officers: President, Reverend Larry Vaughn; President Elect, Reverend Joe Thrower; Secretary, Reverend John Paul Tomko; Member At Large for two years Mike Hare; and Member at Large with one year remaining, Reverend Michael Miller. They will serve until the next Annual Business Meeting which will be held in March of 2018.
In 1991 Hannibal Regional Hospital formed a steering committee to develop and implement a volunteer chaplaincy program to assist Reverend Ted Manzke, who was providing pastoral support to patients and team members. The steering committee first met in December of 1991 and the Volunteer Chaplaincy Corps officially began in March of 1992, with Reverend Jay Stinson serving as the President. The first Volunteer Chaplaincy Corps Appreciation Banquet was held in January of 1993.
In 2016 the Hannibal Regional Chaplaincy Corps members volunteered 7,501 hours, equal to three full time employees. There are twenty-six pastoral care active volunteers. Services were provided to over 7,477 patients, family members and team members by the staff and volunteer chaplains.
