The Professional Practice Counsel had a difficult job in selecting a winner from over 20 nurses who were nominated for the Daisy Award. Each nurse who was nominated received a DAISY pin to display on their name badge. Melissa Brewer, RN, on PCU day shift, received the first DAISY Award on January 13, 2017. As the DAISY recipient Melissa, received a special DAISY pin, hand carved statue, certificate, special parking space, and cinnamon rolls for her team.

Melissa had three nominations. Patients, families, physicians, and co-workers wrote heartfelt stories on the nomination forms.  One co-worker said, “To say that Melissa goes above and beyond is a huge understatement. Her leadership is a priceless asset to our unit. While on duty one day, I was caring for a patient who received some very sad news. I asked Melissa to please come say a prayer with my sweet patient and without hesitation she followed me down the hall. Her words of encouragement were heartfelt, comforting, and endearing to the patient, her daughter, and myself. She is an amazing nurse, educator, friend to all, and a priceless, fearless leader.” One patient said, “Melissa was the charge nurse while I was in PCU. After receiving devastating news about my diagnosis, she hugged me, prayed with me and showed caring toward me. You don’t find that often in any person.” A patient’s family said, “Melissa was exceptional! She was the kindest nurse we have ever met. She took the time to explain the medical condition in a way we could understand. She also took the time to pray with us, which we loved! Melissa also talked with us and helped ease any anxiety we had about the hospital stay, medical condition, and just life in general. Melissa is a great asset to your staff and to those of us she has touched.”

Congratulations, Melissa, on this honor; and thank you for all you do for our organization and our guests!
