Nursing Grand Rounds

Never Stop Learning!

Nursing Grand Rounds provides a forum for nurses to share and receive clinical expertise and experiences, nursing best practices and other topics of interest that help improve patient outcomes and enhance the patient experience.  The Nursing Development Department would like to thank our Nursing Grand Rounds presenters for their August and September presentations.

In August Ellen Taylor, MSN, RN, OCN presented an evidence based educational presentation on The Care of the Oncology Patient. Ellen explained how to assess for Symptom Distress in Cancer Patients, understand abnormal lab values, and explained the different current treatment modalities. She discussed new and exciting game-changing medications used to treat and cure cancer patients.

September’s NGRs offered Effective Communication skills and techniques between the Physician and Nurse. Dr. Michael Bukstein discussed when to call the doctor, how to prepare for the call, what to say for openers, how to facilitate getting the right orders, and how to conclude the call. Kim Bouyea, MSN, RN-BC illustrated how patient outcomes and patient safety are improved by using effective professional communication. Kim discussed the importance of using SBAR as our means of handoff between healthcare workers, and how collaboration is one of the hallmarks of safe and highly reliable patient care.

All monthly Nursing Grand Round presentations are videotaped and can be viewed at a later date. To watch the presentation and receive 1.0 nursing contact hour contact Nancy Gertz or Deb Austin at Organizational Learning and request the NGRs be assigned to you or you can self-enroll into the class yourself.  The next NGR: Diabetes Management – Shots and Beyond will be presented by Dr. Purvi Parikh, November 29th at 8am, 12 noon, and 5:30 pm.
