A  person  asks himself, “Is my heart working all right?” and “Why do I feel so funny?” For most people, the answer is an unequivocal, “Yes, you are normal!” Almost everyone’s heart will occasionally have beats that start lower in the electrical system of the heart and they feel different  from the others–like the heart…

Thank You! Wow…I Feel BETTER: Discover the Energy of Gratitude

February 8, 2016

By Julie Leverenz, Vice President – Patient Experience

As I write this I’m still reeling from the heartwarming appreciation for our team expressed by every single leader at our recent HealthGrades awards celebration.  Each leader representing us that morning – Todd Ahrens, Dr.Parikh, Bob Crawford, Dr. Mikhail, Trista Long and Dr. Burton  – spontaneously focused his or her acceptance remarks on recognizing and thanking our outstanding  team at HRHS. I was reeling from the experience because, quite frankly, it just feels good to be a part of something that others appreciate – something special that really matters.

Enhancing the EXPERIENCE of Our Patients and Families

February 8, 2016

How are we assessing our patients’ experience at HRHS?

By Julie H. Leverenz, Vice President – Patient Experience

Beginning last October we began sending a survey in the mail to most of our hospitalized patients asking them to give us feedback about their stay. We also send surveys to other groups of patients – outpatients, home care, emergency, etc. In this issue, we’ll focus on the inpatient survey.  This assessment  is standardized for all patients in all hospitals throughout the United States. The results are publically reported on the Medicare.gov/hospitalcompare website.  Our scores not only reveal whether our patients and their families trust us with their care, the results impact the reimbursement we receive from Medicare.

My Heart Nearly Killed Me

clinton-millerWhen Clinton Miller had a sore throat, he stopped in Express Care to see about quick treatment. Express Care is a fast, easy option for patients looking for exceptional care on a walk-in basis.

Not having a primary care physician, Clinton chose the convenient option of Express Care for something he thought was a minor illness. Luckily for him, the skilled Nurse Practitioners at Express Care detected a heart murmur and urged Clinton to follow up with a cardiologist at Hannibal Regional Medical Group.

“The persistence and concern of the Nurse Practitioners at Express Care saved my life,” says Clinton.

At just 33, Clinton was married with a two-year-old daughter. He wasn’t expecting to be diagnosed with aortic valve stenosis, a narrowing of the heart’s aortic valve that can obstruct blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body.
