NEW!! The Foundation will be offering a first come, first serve shirt sale at the Foundation office at Shinn Lane on Monday, September 14th and Tuesday, September 15th from 8:00 am-4:30 pm. Come early to make sure you get your shirt size!

The Foundation is offering the opportunity to bundle your purchase which include options of two t-shirts for $25 or a t-shirt & long sleeve shirt for $30. Team members can also take advantage of payroll deduction if the purchase totals more than $25. The Foundation will no longer be holding shirts for an extended period of time. Shirts requested will only be held for 48 hours and then will be placed back for sale with all remaining shirts.

What You Should Know About Prostate Cancer

ProstateCancerAwarenessDigitalSlideFINALSeptember marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and as a result, we would like to help raise awareness on the importance of knowing the risk factors and visiting with your primary care provider if you have questions.

Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. The American Cancer Society’s estimates that in 2014 about 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and approximately 29,480 men will die of prostate cancer in the United States alone.

Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men, but an estimated 1 in every 7 males will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.  About 6 cases out of 10 are diagnosed in men ages 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40.

Hannibal Regional Buddy Walk a Great Success

BuddyWalkHannibal Regional Hospital Foundation recently hosted its first Buddy Walk. The walk, which took place on the Healthy Way Fitness Trail, was held on September 6th with over 150 individuals and 50 dogs supporting the event.  Leading the way was cancer survivor Mary Dunaway of Shelbina and her dog, Buddy. Participants enjoyed a walk around the Healthy Way Fitness Trail, the opportunity to have a professional photograph taken with their buddies, and a water station staffed by the James E. Cary Cancer Center team. All funds raised from the event supported the James E. Cary Cancer Center.

Physician_internsHannibal Regional Medical Group and the Hannibal Clinic participated in the MU School of Medicine Summer Intern Program.  Four medical students from the area completed their internships in the the Hannibal medical community.  The students were Misty Todd from LaGrange, who worked with Arvin Abueg, MD at HRMG Canton Family Practice; Nick Arnold from New London who worked with Patricia Hirner, MD at the Hannibal Clinic; Alan Keller from Palmyra who worked with Gina Pontius, MD at the Hannibal Clinic – Palmyra; and Venkata Gupta, who worked with Dr. Pitney and Dr. Onik from the HRMG Pike Medical Clinic.

Lending a Helping Hand

Hawker2Jordan Hawker, daughter of HRHS team member Melissa Hawker, is a Physical Therapy student at Southwest Baptist University. Jordan recently participated in two physical therapy mission trips, visiting Lima, Peru and Carrefour, Haiti where she helped treat many patients and pass along donations from community members.

While in Peru, Jordan saw a number of pediatric patients and handed out  bubbles that were donated by Shelley Bergman with HRH Pediatric Therapy. Jane Cline, wife of  HRMG physician Dr.Edward Cline, also made the trip to Peru where she donated gait trainers, standers and a wheelchair that she had been able to obtain.  Jordan and Jane fitted several patients for wheelchairs and orthotics during the trip and watched how the kids enjoyed the bubbles!

James E. Cary Cancer Center Offers Lung Screenings

Doctor examining a lung radiographyLung Cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. Each year more people die from lung cancer than colon, breast, and prostate cancer combined. Lung cancer accounts for 27% of all cancer deaths. At least 80% of lung cancer deaths are thought to be a result of smoking. The longer you smoke and the more packs a day you smoke, the greater risk.

67% of lung cancers diagnosed at Hannibal Regional Hospital were either stage III or IV which is directly affects patient outcomes and survival. Overall Stage I and II lung cancers are found at a slightly lower rate than nationally.
